Water Conservation

The population of the world is always growing. Right now, there are about 7.1 billion people on Earth. The UN estimates that by 2050 there will be an additional 3 billion people on the planet. Water demand could increase to unsafe levels unless we do our part and start conserving and recycling water NOW!

You guessed it! This is your challenge!

The fact is, everyone needs water to survive. The typical amount is eight glasses a day, which varies depending on one’s diet, weight and activity level. And we’re just talking about people. Plant life and animals need water too, but for now we will look at people.

Drink 8 cups, save 8 litres a day!

Now if there are 6.2 billion people and if each person drinks eight 250mL glasses a day, how much water would be used? ____________

If there are 6.2 billion people and if each person reduces the amount they use by eight 250mL glasses a day, how much water would be saved? ____________

Think for a moment how you feel when you are thirsty – I mean, really thirsty. Your mouth is sticky, your throat and lips are dry, but luckily you can just go to the sink and have a cup of water. Now, imagine there isn’t any water. Remember, many people are not as fortunate as us to go to a sink or a corner store. Imagine going to bed and waking up wanting a glass of cold water, but there is nothing in sight.  That’s a harsh reality for many people in the world.

Tip: One reason we drink water is to prevent dehydration. Water helps clean out the body and it promotes healing. Can you imagine how you would look and feel if you didn’t have any water to drink?

Here are some ways you can reduce your water use. I am sure you can think of more suggestions to use or tell your parents about.

  • Use low flow showerheads
  • Use low flush toilets
  • Turn off the taps of dripping sinks
  • Turn off the tap when shampooing your hair
  • Turn off the water while you brush your teeth
  • Collect rainwater to water houseplants
  • Wash more than one piece of laundry at a time
  • Only use the dishwasher when it has a full load
