Dear Diva
The day has come when I realized I just don’t want to be in a relationship anymore. Well, I knew this for months but just didn’t know how to say goodbye without hurting their feelings. Do you have any tips on this?

Dear Overdue Boo
Breaking Up is Hard to Do! No matter what age or sexuality you are, breaking up is hard to do. It can’t be taken lightly, and you need to find an easy and approachable way to explain the situation to the other person. Whether it’s your first relationship, or you’ve been in several already, breaking up is always difficult. Breaking up can be emotionally stressful and potentially damage a person’s self-esteem. However, these are some tips on what to say and do to make the process and outcomes of the break-up easier to deal with, and tips on what not to do; that may make the situation worse.
Do
- Break up in person
- Tell the truth, no matter how hurtful
- Go with your first instinct
- Do the right thing
- Hear the other person out and make sure you both understand the reasons for the break-up
- Be calm and reasonable
Don’t
- Break up via phone, email, text message, or through a friend
- Lie to make it sound better
- Wait to see if your relationship gets better
- Blame yourself for any/all problems with the relationship/break-up
- Ignore what the other person has to say
- Get into a big fight about it, it’ll make things worse
